Description

Sashiko is a Japanese embroidery style with fascinating geometrical patterns made by running stitch traditionally to a dark blue fabric with a white thread – but you can be creative and use other colors too.

You will learn a little bit about the history of Sashiko and the instructor will show the basic techniques. You’ll get lot of ideas, inspiration and also some patterns to start your own work. Or if you want, you will get help in creating your own design.

You will make (or at least start) an own, unique embroidery work: it can be just a patch for practice or a small product (like a pouch, a pillow case, a pin cushion or a card case). You’ll learn how to transfer the pattern on the fabric, how to stitch and also how to finish the work.

You can also bring your own materials, if you have something special in mind. This technique was originally used for repairing and strengthening old clothes so if you have for example worn out jeans you want to mend, be sustainable and bring them with!

You are welcome even when you haven’t done any embroidery before – Helka will help you to get started. And for those who already have some experience: the technique looks simple, but we are sure we can find you some challenges!

The course is led by Helka Mäki, qualified textile handicrafts teacher from Finland. She teaches in English, but can also guide in Finnish and limited German.

Cost: CHF 115.- (All materials are included in the course fee: needle, fabric and embroidery threads).

This course is 5 hours in total from 10am to 4pm – with a one hour lunch break in the middle. Bring your lunch (a fridge and a microwave is available), or buy lunch from the local bakery. The workshop is located in Social Fabric’s atelier at Eichstrasse 29, 8045 Zürich (next to Bahnhof Binz and the atelier is at the 3. floor).

There are a limited number of 10 spots for this course, so sign up to reserve your spot.
