This workshop is perfect for you if you have some basic sewing experience, but do not yet feel comfortable with sewing clothes using a commercial sewing pattern. In this workshop, you will learn about taking basic measurements, copying and adjusting patterns to the correct size, seam allowances, placing the pattern correctly on the fabric and cutting the pieces and then finishing the garment by sewing the pieces together.

You will deepen your knowledge about fabrics, patterns and workmanship and learn to sew garments from ready patterns or patterns you made in one of our pattern making courses.

You learn how to handle various fabrics and gain an understanding of which workmanship is best suited for which type of fabric and detail. You will grow a deeper understanding of what order to best assemble a garment in and will learn how to add finishing details – such as simple pockets, collars and closing mechanisms.

For the first session, you bring your pattern and – if already available – the fabric. We will review the projects of all participants and, if not yet decided, discuss the right choice of material. Otherwise you can start cutting your styles. At Social Fabric we have a couple of basic patterns and fabrics available. However, if you have something specific in mind, it is advisable to come prepared with your own pattern and pre-washed fabric. Make sure the pattern that you choose is rated either ‘super easy’ or ‘easy’. Whenever required, the teacher will provide you with addresses of where best to buy which type of fabric.

Instructor Ruth Knipping has many years of experience in the textile and clothing industry. After a practical and academic education (clothing tailor in the craft, Dipl.-Ing. Clothing Technology Design (FH)), she has successfully completed various positions in the industry with a focus on design, development and manufacturing. Ruth will share her knowledge and passion about best practice and professional, neat workmanship.

The course costs CHF 330 and has a maximum of 8 places available.

The course will take place on five Thursday evenings, starting on the 29th of August. No course will be held on Thursday, September 5th. The course ends on the 3rd of October.
