This course takes place on 4 consecutive Wednesday evenings.
This course is perfect for you if you are a total beginner at sewing, or if you have some basic sewing experience, but do not yet feel comfortable with sewing using a commercial sewing pattern. In this course, you will learn about taking basic measurements, copying and adjusting patterns to the correct size, seam allowances, placing the pattern correctly on the fabric and cutting the pieces, and the basics of using a domestic sewing machine and an overlocker (for finishing the seams).
We have a few easy patterns available for your use, including a pattern for a t-shirt, a tunic (basic blouse with no zippers or buttons), or a jersey (stretchy) dress. Alternatively, bring your own pattern. You can purchase a pattern at either Stofftrucke or Bernina in Zurich (see the bottom of our course page for links). Make sure the pattern that you choose is rated either ‘super easy’ or ‘easy’, and that it includes instructions in your native language.
Fabric: we have a limited selection of fabric available for purchase at Social Fabric. You can purchase fabric from us on the first day of the course, or you can bring your own. If you are bringing your own pattern, the pattern will indicate how much and what type of fabric you need. Ask the sales person at the shop for some help in choosing the fabric. Alternatively, if you want to make a t-shirt, bring 1 meter of jersey (stretchy) fabric, if you want to make a jersey dress bring 2 meters of jersey (stretchy) fabric, and if you want to make a tunic, bring 1.5 meters of light-weight woven (non-stretchy) fabric.
