We ran our ‘We Aspire’ campaign from September 1st to October 1st, 2016, in order to crowdfund a work placement for Cisse, a refugee tailor from Ivory Coast. Cisse has a great eye for colour, and he created many of the items that were sold through the campaign during our Thursday morning free community sewing classes for refugees.
We are building an inclusive community at Social Fabric, and the aim of our campaign was to show that the community can pull together to do great things – Cisse’s work placement was financed by pre-selling items that are to be produced by him in the six months following the campaign. We raised more than chf 29 000, which allows us to employ Cisse for more than seven months. We signed his contract as soon as the campaign passed the funding goal, and he started working at Social Fabric on October 1st, 2016. Cisse is receiving mentoring from a professional tailor, in order to improve his skills.
Our goal is to continue to employ Cisse after the period of his crowdfunded work placement, by selling items that are made by him. You can already purchase a rucksack made by Cisse at www.refugees-welcome.ch. We plan to add t-shirts and men’s shirts designed and made by Cisse to the Social Fabric webshop in spring, 2017.
