Next to food, fabrics and clothing are the products that we have our most intimate relationships with. We wrap ourselves in our fabric sheets during the night, we dry ourselves with fabric towels after we shower, and we clothe ourselves in fabric garments that make a personal statement about our identity. Yet, most of us have lost our connection with how our fabrics are made, where they come from, and who the makers are. Part of our mission at Social Fabric is to reconnect people to the fabrics that they wear and use every day, by providing a space and opportunity for our community members to work with fabric themselves, and by bringing them closer to the sources and makers of textiles and garments. As we get closer to the beginning of 2017, we are making plans for how we can grow this mission and our impact as we move forward. Keep an eye out in the near future for more updates about our plans.
In the meantime, we will be at the Heiliger Bimbam Weihnachtsmarkt at Maag Halle in Zürich on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this coming week. The market features products made by more than 150 local producers and artists. Stop by if you would like to buy some unique Christmas gifts while supporting small local businesses and artisans.
This autumn, local designer Mario Puntillo gave his first pattern making course at Social Fabric using the ‚SITAM‘ method. This method allows non-experts to create made-to-measure patterns and own designs relatively easily using a special template tool or ‚Schablone‘. The course was fully booked, and the participants found it to be an interesting and unique experience. Mario will give his next pattern making and design course at Social Fabric on Wednesday evenings starting January 18th (10 weeks, 19.00 – 21.30). The main language of the course will be German, but Mario can also guide in English and Italian. If you would like to participate, please register here by this coming Thursday, December 15th, because Mario needs to order the template tools for the participants by that date. The course fee includes the template tool, which you get to take with you at the end of the course.
See you all soon at Social Fabric,
Heather and the Social Fabric team
